The number of European countries, as well as their names, changes quite often. From the latest metamorphosis: once unified Soviet Union disintegrated into fifteen separate states, half of which belongs to Europe (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). Yugoslavia broke down into Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia; Czechoslovakia broke down to Czech Republic and Slovakia. East and West Germany, on the contrary, were united in the unified Germany. Separatist sentiments are strong in Catalonia and the Basque Country (Spain), Northern Ireland and Scotland (UK), Flanders (Belgium). An intense push is being made concerning the recognition of Kosovo, which is a part of Serbia, as an independent state. If delving further into the past, the map of Europe can become simply unrecognizable, for so much it has changed and so many borders appeared or disappeared.
You can study European flags and European coats of arms.
